Welcome to Connect groups!
We live in a large global city, where it’s easy to feel alone. Are you looking for new friends and community to support your spiritual journey?
Connect groups are inclusive, informal groups that facilitate meaningful community in our neighbourhood. We look forward to seeing you all on Zoom for these casual evening Connect groups to chat about our lives, share time in prayer, read a scripture passage together and discuss how it connects to our daily lives in this complex and diverse city we call home.
This session of Connect groups is currently underway.
Connect Groups help support my spiritual journey and build strong relationships within the church. It’s given me the confidence to share, explore the Word, and better understand the Truth.
A.S.
Connect groups are all about questions and we welcome them all!
Below are a few questions you might have about how Connect groups work. If you have more questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
Frequently asked questions
Connect groups allow us to connect with each other outside of Sunday worship and coffee time. This is a time to get to know each other as well as share our thoughts about life, the world, and the message of Jesus Christ.
And the Gospel lets us know that being together in groups is part of the journey:
Where two or three gather together as my followers,
I am there among them.
Matthew 18:20
The meetings will be for one hour on Zoom and we will respect this time frame.
No! We will strive to send out any readings and discussion questions ahead of time, but there is no need or pressure to read these in advance. You can follow along during the meeting.
No! Connect groups are safe spaces for newcomers, seekers, and long-time churchgoers to meet and share, question, ask, wonder aloud, and connect with each other as we journey together along our faith path and wrestle with what it all means in our daily life.
No! There is no pressure to speak—share and participate as you feel comfortable. If we do call upon you to share your thoughts, always feel free to say, “pass”, and we will ask another person or move on to another topic.
We ask all participants to respect that what we chat about during the meetings stays within the group. This is important to ensure people feel safe to share their questions, ideas, and thoughts within the group.
Their role is to ensure you have a safe virtual space to meet, to provide each of you with a chance to share as you are comfortable, and to make sure we all listen while one of us is speaking. They are also here to learn. They don’t have all the answers but welcome all your questions! And they can always reach out to Reverend Ali for more information on key questions that come out of our discussions.
At the start of each meeting, we will check in with each other to share how our day was, how our week is going, and anything on our minds as a way of connecting and getting to know each other better.
After our check-in time, we will open in prayer.
Someone in the group will then read the selected scripture passage and we will discuss together how the passage sparks interest in us and how we see ourselves in the story. It’s also a time to ask questions about the passage and the themes it contains.
After this open discussion time, we will share our thoughts using guiding questions from Reverend Ali.
Finally, we will end in prayer before closing the meeting.
We hope Connect groups will find the time of connection both grounding and enriching after a busy day in between Sunday worship.

About the facilitators
I have been part of St. George on Yonge since immigrating to Canada from England in the mid-1970s. As life-long but nomadic Anglicans, we planted roots at St.George and the community helped as adjust to living in Canada. These days, you won’t find me in church on Sundays. I am an entrepreneur and balance my small business with being a full-time caregiver for my mum. We worship online and I volunteer at SGY as part of the Advisory board, YCCCI daycare board, and facilitate the Senior Connect group which brings my mum virtually together with her homebound friends.
I was born and educated in Quebec but moved to Toronto in the 1970’s because of the strong separatist movement. I joined St. George in 1977, and have been happy to offer my time, talent and treasure to this amazing congregation. I retired many years ago, having worked in economics and in human resources/personnel. My volunteering at St. George includes being on Advisory Board, on the daycare board, singing in the choir (when we had a choir before the pandemic), helping present concerts for the public, representing St. George at meetings of the wider church, offering prayers at worship services, working on the 2005–2011 building project, and occasionally playing for worship services when the Music Director takes a well-earned break.
I have been part of St. George on Yonge since January of this year (2025) and feel blessed to have been so warmly welcomed here. I grew up within the Roman Catholic church in my hometown of Ottawa but have been attending Anglican churches in Toronto for the past ~20 years. I am trained as a scientist and work in vaccine research and development. I am passionate about social justice, creation care and truth and reconciliation as well as having our church be a place of welcome and fellowship.
